Dexter "Once Upon a Time..." Review

Last night's Dexter was an episode about Men and Monsters, first impressions, big decisions, betrayal, and hot interns. Let us discuss.

*TSSSS* "OH IT'S ACTUALLY HOT, I ONLY WANTED TO SCARE YOU!!!"
[Spoilers below, bad jokes above]

This episode, to me, seemed like a better lead in to the season than the premiere. Not to say the premiere was bad, but a few of the threads that will be explored this season are now front and center, fleshing themselves out. We see Dexter find a killer who truly changed his ways through faith, we see the restaurant shooting video develop into Deb becoming lieutenant, and we see more of this season's "big bads" and learn a little more about them. Of course, these are just the big plot points, as there was a lot of story progression in this episode.

Michael C. Hall is great as usual, adding little touches such as putting his hands to his face in a way that almost seems like he is praying as the thugs leave Brother Sam's garage. But this episode also had a lot of great character moments for the entire cast. Deb being simultaneously excited about the lieutenant position and downtrodden that it is a betrayal of Batista,  Batista giving his blessing to Deb when she breaks the news of the offer, and even Masuka's disbelief of how perfect the hot intern is, are all scenes that stand out to me.

A big surprise for me in this episode was Brother Sam, played by Mos (formerly known as Mos Def. Rappers, am I right?). At the beginning of the episode, we learn of Brother Sam's violent past, and how he has supposedly reformed by finding religion and running a garage staffed by ex-cons. We are in the same boat as Dexter, in that we want to see this 'hypocrite' on Dexter's table. As the episode progresses, Dexter witnesses Brother Sam sneak into a house, and hears a gunshot, followed by Sam carrying the 'corpse' of his victim to the trunk of his car. Dexter has all the reason in the world to take this guy out.  Or does he?

When Dexter returns to the garage, we find that the un-named person had actually taken a shot at Brother Sam, and was a "lost sheep" who worked at Brother Sam's garage. Not only was Brother Sam sincere in his reformation, but we see that he is willing to die for it, as a group of thugs come to take the missing worker back. The character of Brother Sam is a great addition to the show. I look forward to seeing where the writers go with this character, and to see if his morals will stay strong when he is inevitably approached by the Cult to become a member.   He is essential to Dexter's growth because he represents the possibility of transforming from 'monster' to 'man'.

Overall, the episode was good. I only touched on a few things I really enjoyed in this episode, but a surprising amount of story happened here. Quinn proposing and being rejected by Deb and Colin Hank's character Travis possibly having to kill his sister are just two of the story developments I left out. It's another solid Dexter episode, and really, has there ever been a bad one?

Think carefully, now.
